This is NOT H J Ward. Ward kept a meticulous list of every painting he ever did and where it was published, which David Saunders reprinted in his 2010 biography of Ward. This is not in the list. Additionally, this is the 09/45 issue of Private Detective and Ward died in 02/45. Saunders listed covers that were published posthumously and this is not one of them. Additionally, if you look at the woman’s face you can see that this is an Allen Anderson painting and not Ward.
It doesn’t look like Allen Gustav Anderson to me. It actually looks very much like Hugh Joseph Ward, yet I don’t see a signature anywhere.
I thought it was Joseph Szokoli who always re-did Ward covers. I wasn’t aware that Anderson also re-did them. Other than the woman’s “Anderson facial features” (which I do not see), why do you think Anderson did this cover? Can you point me to an Anderson cover that has these same facial features?
I might also add that I don’t see any Szokoli strokes on the woman, either.
