The great thing about these covers is often the little things and Mr Phillips was a master of it; the ornaments on the mantlepiece, the crockery on the table and the fire-shovel all fill out the picture and tell a story of domestic bliss. But you wuld never guess he was a soldier unless you noticed the pin in his colour and maybe the fact he is wearing khaki pants. Which is why, perhaps, they made a starker, more obvious cover later on, still using the central characters. But I like this cover the best
