This is Hugh Joseph Ward (per my eyes.) Even without the female character expressing herself with the same look of terror all Ward females have, the ingenious set-up is Wardian through and through: she’s in the pit and a shovel has already been turned and the dirt’s going in, on top of her, while others are getting their shovelfuls of dirt ready to toss in or are looking in. The cover is brilliant on so many levels.
