Actually there WAS a story on a Showtime anthology where people were sold household robots, and they wanted to buy a better and better one than their neighbours. In the end it was a plot to rule the earth by aliens who tricked us into buying ultimate robots that took us over.
If it were not for the alien controlling it, this looks like an early Asimov robot story. The robot feigned love to make his owner’s friends jealous.
