    1. She’s listening in on someone else’s conversation. Early phone lines were often party lines, with everyone on the block using connected telephone lines. These setups allowed anyone to listen in to everyone’s conversations. That’s why her hand is on the microphone, so that nobody can hear that her phone is active and know someone is listening to them.
