Harold W. McCauley did some *great* work on pulps in the Forties and magazines in the Fifties (just click on the tag for his name and see), but by this time either his talents were in severe decline or the “Midnight Reader” company only paid $7.50 per cover painting and Harold only spent 10 minutes doing it.

Personally, I think the artwork fits the plot description quite well.
