In France – and America – that original title would be Spades and Clubs, Diamonds and Hearts. The author is showing off his knowledge of Italian playing cards (and the tarot decks based on these).
A widespread error that’s worth fixing, in spite of almost all encyclopedias and authors :
Wands (or Scepters) are Diamonds, Pentacles (or Coins) are Hearts and Cups are Clubs.
This common confusion comes from the fact that someone once compared a heart to a cup (or a vase, as it is in Ancient Egypt) and then, the original meaning of the symbols was lost forever (until now).
