Bantam Books art director to Robert Maguire: “Have Shell Scott lose that crew cut! I don’t care if it is ‘iconic,’ this is the Seventies, darn it!”
This is certainly a departure from the usual Shell Scott cover — a portrait of smiling Shell. A few years later, Maguire illustrated THE SPIDER, with a similar approach — lose the black hat and cloak, make him blonde with a white turtleneck sweater.
